| SITE PROTECTION
It is our priority and privilege to protect the two cedar trees on the site, and
the topsoil. Care is also being taken to prevent soil erosion, and sedimentation
of the ditch that carries the accumulated storm water to the ocean.
CONSTRUCTION WASTES
35% of the space in Canada's landfills is taken up with construction wastes and
debris. This amounts to an enormous volume of material. Cedar Corner aims to reduce
its construction wastes by 90% below the usual volume by paying careful attention
to the recycling and re-use of wood offcuts, cardboard, metals, plastics and drywall.
CHEMICAL TOXINS
In every developed nation today there is an increase in cancer, autism, and childhood
learning disorders. This can be linked directly to the number
of chemicals people encounter in their daily lives. There are 85,000 chemicals
on the market, and the blood and urine of the average person contains 90 industrial
chemicals, 53 of which are linked to cancer. At Cedar Corner, we aim not to use
adhesives, sealants, paints or other materials which contain harmful chemicals
such as formaldehyde or PVC, or which offgas volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
ORDERING and TRACKING
LEED certification insists that, we keep careful track of the materials we use
and how construction wastes have been recycled.
